Web Writing Lesson Learned When My Dad Fell From a Tree

When my Dad fell off a ladder in 1985 I had no idea he was teaching me a lesson in web writing. In those days the web didn’t even exist.

My Dad had been picking apples from the tall tree at the back of our garden when he had a momentary lapse of concentration, lost his balance and fell to the ground. Luckily he had trained as a parachutist in the army and remembered how to land safely.

This all happened many years ago and I didn’t give it a second thought until recently when someone asked me a question during one of my website copywriting courses.

Army training
Out of nowhere I remembered the incident in our back garden and began to explain that but for his army training my Dad might have died that summer afternoon in the small town where we lived in Buckinghamshire.

But, I went on to say, we should remember that most people are not so lucky as my Dad and can land badly in such situations. As a result they might break a limb, suffer spinal injury, or even, heaven forbid, be killed.

What has all this got to do with web writing? Well simply this.

When someone lands on a page of your site for the first time you cannot assume they have had special training like my Dad and will therefore come through the experience safely.

You have to imagine they are completely unprepared for whatever awaits them on that page and consequently you must do everything you can to ensure they have a safe and comfortable landing.

Of course it’s highly unlikely anyone is going to suffer physical injury or death as a result of landing on a badly put together web page, but the impact on you, the site owner, could be almost as painful.

Copy That Sells: Three Easy Web Writing Tips to Speed Up the Internet Learning Curve

When you learn how to capture the attention of millions through the tools on the internet, it’s never a waste. No matter what business you’re in, when you know how to write copy that sells, you’ll find yourself advancing in your business. Here, I’d like to share with you my passion, how to write compelling copy. Why? Because my passion has to do with figuring out a way where people will buy automatically, so I don’t have to do what I hate – cold calling! After a year of learning the hard way with lousy sales copy, I’m finally making it happen! Here’s how…

Format to capture your audience with copy that sells…

You do this with a good heading. Think about it; what compels you to pick up a newspaper or click a link to an article? It’s the heading, of course! Create a big heading with really bold print. You should also have subheadings to break up the text. On a blog post, these are referred to as H1, H2 and H3.

Remember, the reason why anyone is searching on the web is either to provide pleasure or alleviate pain in some way. (Easy to read information to generate easy cash flow through internet sales should make your life less painful and more pleasurable!)

First, the title of your blog post or article should serve at least two of these three primary functions:

1) Tells what it is without spilling the beans. By this I mean that your reader needs to know a little about what to expect, but remains curious enough to click and read. Use terms like “easy”, or “three tips”.

2) Tell why your reader needs it: For example, “When you know how to write copy that sells, your struggles with how to write on the internet will begin to end”

3) Appeal to your reader’s emotion: “Three Easy Web Writing Tips to Bypass the Internet Learning Curve” tells my reader that I’ve struggled as much, or even more than they have, and I understand the pain behind trying again and again through trial and error. And I have!

For example, the first 50 posts I wrote can be found nowhere on the internet! I just have to “chalk it up to experience” and learn by doing. And, don’t get me wrong, learning by doing is a great way to learn, but taking the time for the learning curve, I’m a little impatient. I don’t do wait! LOL – Do you?

And, be sure to leave a lot of “white space” between your paragraphs. Make short paragraphs, about 2-3 sentences each, because this calls for easy reading. If it’s a blog post, break it up with a lot of pictures, too, and link the image to a video if you can. The average person would really rather look at picture or videos that read.

Second, copy that sells involves baring your soul…

Just as mentioned above with appealing to your reader’s emotion with the title, it’s just as important to keep the attention of your reader with a genuine attitude.

It’s OK to be controversial; in fact, it could work in your favor. The fact is, you’re not going to win the attention and admiration of 100% of your audience. Don’t try to please everyone on the web, because that will give you a “lukewarm” image, and that’s an image that no one will remember.

Think about the news entertainment these days. The most popular shows are very red or very blue – not lukewarm. This is something I’m still working on, because I’m that type of person who just likes to be liked by everybody. But I’m finding that the more I bare my soul, the more sales I get.

And write the way you talk, as if you were speaking to a friend. Use the same slang language you would use when you talk. This gives your reader a sense that a real person.

And third, copy that sells always leads to a good sales funnel..

I learned this the hard way, too. I used to plaster the name of my organization all over my article and in my video. But what does someone who’s reading on the web do when they see that? They stop reading immediately and Google the name of your business!

There are tons of competitors out there trying to steal the eyes away from a prospective buyer with copy that sells to draw them away from you.

Don’t let them do it. Instead, tell a story that leads into how or why your subject was able to alleviate their pain or find pleasure with this magic product (your product), providing a link to a compelling sales video.

Make sure that your signature box or final paragraph with your links assumes the sale. Let your “call to action” link suggest that your reader wants what you have.

Remember, learning how to write compelling copy takes time and practice. The one thing that all of the best sales copy experts have in common is that they remained persistent, and continued to learn and grow.

What sells is simply being real. Be yourself, and keep on practicing. With a little persistence, having copy that sells will be second nature for you.

Therefore, start by setting up your own blog. This is both a learning exercise, and a way to get clients. It’s also an easy method of teaching yourself new skills.

Write several posts. You can consider these posts your online portfolio.

2. Find a Client, Preferably Locally (It’s Just Easier)

Now your blog’s set up, it’s time to find clients — in your local area.

Confine yourself to your local area, because it’s much easier to get clients locally if you’re a new writer than it is target the global market.

Do a Google search for local businesses. Some will have websites.

Here’s a mistake to avoid. I see many writers promoting themselves as “Web content writers.”

Please don’t do this. Your prospective clients don’t want content. They DO want customers.

Frame your offering like this: “I can help you to double the customers your website is currently attracting.”

With more content (of the right kind), your prospect will get more traffic to his site, and more sales.

If you frame your offering from your customers’ point of view, rather than your own, you’ll get hired.

3. Keep Blogging

To make money as a Web writer, you need clients. You can get them by advertising, or by creating content and attracting clients. The former takes money, the latter takes time.

I advise you to do create content on your blog. The more you write, the better a writer you’ll become.

4. Ask Your Clients for Testimonials

When you’re new, you need credibility. Your clients give you that, via testimonials. However, you will have to ask for a testimonial.

In cases where a client drags his feet on this, encourage him. Ask him a couple of simple questions. “Would you say that your experience with me was positive? How would you describe the experience?”

Voila — you now have a testimonial.

When you’re writing for the Web, articles are your bread and butter. You need a method to write articles quickly, because your buyers usually want to buy articles in packages of ten or more.

Start by familiarizing yourself with the various article types. Some of the most common are reviews, opinion pieces, tips, tutorials, and definition articles (the facts on a particular topic.)

There’s another category of articles, those based on keywords. With this article type, the purchaser will give you a list of keywords for which he wants you to write articles. This is perhaps the easiest type, because you’re free to write whatever you wish, as long as it makes sense and includes the keywords.

Researching Articles – How To Write About Anything

It’s easy to write articles on topics on which you have a background. It’s much less easy to write with authority on topics in which you have no background at all, however it is possible.

If you were writing for print, you’d need to do a lot of primary research – you would interview people in person, over the phone or via email. When you’re writing for the Web, unless the purchaser is paying print prices, you can rely on secondary sources. If you have no background in a topic at all, leave yourself a couple of hours to research the topic broadly. Use the Web search engines to get an overview of the topic. Fast-Writing Tips: Write An Article In 20 Minutes Or Less

The ability to write quickly comes with practice. So don’t beat yourself up if your first article takes you two hours. You’ll become faster with each article you write. Eventually you’ll be able to write the first draft of an article of 400 to 500 words in around 20 minutes.

The key is not to spend too long thinking. For a short article you need an Introduction, the Main Body of the article, and a Conclusion. For generations of journalists, this has been boiled down to – “tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them, and tell them what you told them.”

Your writing process starts with your working title. Keep this title in mind – write it on a sticky note and paste it on your monitor: “Top Five Weight Loss Diets”, “Should You Install Windows Vista?”, or “How To House-Train Your Puppy.” Your working title keeps you on track.

Now make a list of three points you want to cover in the article.

Write your introduction, mentioning the three points. Cover the three points. Wrap up the article’s conclusion by referring to your introduction. That’s it. You’re done.

Leave your first draft for a day if you can, to get some distance from it. If that’s not possible, leave it for an hour. When you come back, you can do a revision of the article. You may change it a little or a lot – that depends on the article. I tend to write long, so in my revision I trim excess sentences and words.

Over time, you’ll become very fast at writing articles, because your Web writing muscles will build over time. The ability to write articles on demand is a very valuable skill online. The more proficient you are, the more your Web writing income will rise.

The one most important part of a persuasive piece written for online is the title. Don’t just throw up any old title, no, spend some time and do some keyword research and craft the best title you can. You want your title to grab the web surfers attention and pull them into the rest of your content. And you want your piece to show up in the serps (search engine results pages.)

Try to identify with your reader, and the problem that brought them to your written piece in the first place. Let them know you feel their pain, you have been in their shoes. You know where they are coming from.

Now tell them how your solution to the problem took all your pain away, and will take their pain away as well. You have done the research for them and found the perfect solution, and are offering it to them on a silver platter! Your product or service is just what they have been searching for…the light at the end of the tunnel, just what the doctor ordered, the answer to all of their prayers…you get the picture!

Close with your call to action. This is almost as important as the title, so spend some time and craft a good call to action that will entice those click-throughs.
